Are you missing one or more teeth? You’re not alone. Luckily, there are several ways you can correct this problem. The cosmetic dentists of Waterford Dental Health of Connecticut explain the four types of dental bridges available. After updating your smile, continue to care for your mouth with proper teeth cleaning and regular visits to the dentist.

4 Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional Dental Bridges

You must have teeth on both sides of the gap to use a traditional dental bridge. It is the most common type of dental bridge and includes at least one fake tooth. Dental crowns are cemented onto the adjacent teeth to keep a fake one in place. They are robust enough to replace molars. However, to provide enough room for the crowns, a cosmetic dentist must remove the enamel on the healthy teeth. Because enamel doesn’t grow back, you will need dental crowns for the adjacent teeth, even if you opt for a different dental bridge later in life.

Cantilever Dental Bridges

Therefore, if you have only one natural tooth next to the gap, a cosmetic dentist can still correct the problem. Similarly, with traditional dental bridges, you still have to keep a crown on the enamel-free adjacent tooth. Additional complications, such as fractured teeth or loosened crowns, can ensue because only one side is supported.

Maryland Dental Bridges

This type of dental bridge does not hold the fake tooth in place with crowns; therefore, your adjacent teeth don’t need to be filed. Although you still need teeth on both sides of the gap, the fake tooth is held in place with porcelain or metal framework.

The cosmetic dentists explain how the bond of Maryland dental bridges is not as strong as traditional dental bridges. In areas of frequent biting, like molars, the framework may not stay in place or get in the way of your gums.

Dental Implant-Supported Bridges

If you have more than one missing tooth, you should consider dental implants. Your cosmetic dentist will create a series of implants, usually one for each missing tooth. No dental crowns or framework is needed to hold the fake teeth in place. They feel comfortable, like natural teeth but they’re secure. To achieve this type of dental bridge, two surgeries are required. You will also have to be patient and wait up to five months for the process to be complete.
