While many Americans love to shop, few are familiar with the history of their beloved malls. The first indoor American shopping center was named Southdale Center, and it opened in 1956 in Edina, Minnesota. Conceived by the Austrian immigrant and architect Victor Gruen, he envisioned a suburban social center where consumers could congregate and buy goods in a safe, public square—similar to those in European cities.

The concept became a huge hit in postwar America and spread throughout the country. Since then, malls have expanded to include clothing stores, restaurants, banks, movie theaters, and national department stores, all of which occupy rental space in the same building. Today, Maui Marketplace in Kahului, HI, is part of the shopping history that continues to shape American culture.

A Guide to Shopping Mall History

What Is the Oldest Mall?

MallTrajan’s Market of Ancient Rome is likely the world’s oldest shopping mall. Constructed between 100 AD and 110 AD, the complex was six stories tall and housed over 150 shops, apartments, and offices. Located at the opposite end of the famed Colosseum, Trajan’s Market of merchants sold spices, fabrics, leathers, wine, oil, and a host of exotic products from throughout the vast empire. One floor of the market, called the Via Biberatica, housed multiple taverns and was similar to contemporary mall food courts.

The Modern Mall

Mall popularity peaked during the 1980s and 90s when “megamalls” became daily hangouts for teens. Popular culture films like the 1982 classic, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and 1995’s “Clueless” featured shopping centers and highlighted how influential mall life was for teens in those eras. Although online shopping has become popular in recent years, malls will always be a part of the cultural lexicon and a place where families can spend the day hunting for great deals.
