Car window tinting helps keep your vehicle from heating up, reduces road glare, and…well…it makes your car look cool. However, many states—Hawaii being one of them—have car window tinting laws in place for safety and law enforcement purposes.

Their friendly, dependable professionals offer fast, reliable service and exceptional customer service, so Ohana Tinting should be your destination in Oahu for great-looking, state-compliant window tinting.

Hawaii State Car Window Tinting Laws

Tint Darkness

Hawaii, unlike many states, permits windshield tinting, but the tint darkness must allow 70% of all visible light to enter. For Sedans, the front, side, and rear windows are allowed a darker tint, but they must allow at least 35% of visible light to pass through. For Trucks, Vans, and SUVs, the same regulations apply to the front windows but the rear windows can be any darkness.

Although reflective auto window tinting is a tremendous heat blocker, Hawaii does not allow its installation on vehicles within the state. Metallic or mirrored elements are not allowed on the front, side, or rear windows because they make identifying vehicle occupants nearly impossible.

Other Rules

Hawaii requires that a vehicle has two side mirrors to compensate for any reduced visibility due to rear window tinting. However, it does not restrict any particular tint colors. No posted stickers to identify legal tinting are required, and manufacturers do not need to certify their film for sale in Hawaii. Lastly, Hawaii does not allow motorists to apply darker or metallic tints based on a medical exemption.
