For those who suffer from chronic pain, a good night’s sleep can seem out of reach. Whether you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep through the night, poor-quality rest has negative effects on your waking life, too.

The board-certified specialists at iSpine Pain Physicians provide chronic pain relief to patients throughout the Twin Cities area. In honor of Better Sleep Month, these physicians offer tips for falling asleep, staying asleep and getting the most out of it when you suffer from chronic pain.

Develop Good Pre-Bedtime Habits

Change Up Your Sleeping Position

Falling asleep with chronic pain is difficult, especially because without distractions, you may have little else to think about. Properly positioning your body will relieve some of that discomfort. Placing a pillow between or underneath your legs, sleeping in the fetal position, alternating sides and gently rolling into and out of bed can make it easier to get better-quality sleep at night.

Check Your Mattress

Is your mattress more than eight years old? Then you should probably replace it. Try out different mattresses and don’t settle until you find one that feels good to you. Some people swear that foam mattresses are the most comfortable, while others prefer the traditional inner-spring variety.

Try Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

For chronic pain relief, apply an analgesic rub on the area or take over-the-counter painkillers like Tylenol®, Advil® or Aleve®. You may also use a heating pad to help relax the muscles.

When it feels like you’ve tried everything and still can’t enjoy the restorative qualities of sleep, it’s time to seek professional help. The board-certified doctors at iSpine Pain Physicians, with locations in Chaska, Crystal, Delano, and Maple Grove, MN, will help you find chronic pain relief so you can sleep better at night.
