  • Proof of Insurance: By law, movers are required to have insurance, which holds them responsible for the value of the goods they’re transporting. It’s your right to request proof of insurance from a moving company. Also, when you receive an estimate, you can select the level of cargo insurance appropriate for your needs. Minimal reimbursement, for instance, only covers 60% of damaged or lost goods while replacement value covers the cost of replacing items.
  • Estimate: It’s your right to request an estimate prior to your move. Estimates can either be binding, meaning the final cost of the job will be exactly as listed, or non-binding, meaning the price provided is simply an approximation, and the final cost could be more or less than the amount listed.

  • Inventory: Many movers will create an inventory of the items they’re transporting, noting their condition. If they do, you have a right to a copy of the full inventory to ensure you agree to the condition of each item listed. Should you find an item becomes damaged during transport, you must record it on the inventory form upon arrival and request the driver to make a note of it as well.  
  • Bill of Lading: This document acts as a receipt. It indicates the owner of the items being shipped, and it must be attached to the estimates during transport.
  • Ability to File a Claim: You’ll have at least 60 days after your move is complete to file a claim. Id you issue a claim, the moving company must respond to it within 15 days after receiving it.
