Some people don’t pay much attention to their tires until an issue comes up, at which point, they would have to bring their vehicle to an auto repair shop or their car dealership for repair or replacement. The decision, however, will depend on a number of factors, including the location and extent of the damage.

A leading car dealership shares some of the factors you need to consider in deciding whether to have your tires repaired or replaced:

  • Sliced Sidewall: Potholes, curbs, and debris on the road are often unavoidable. Hitting them hard can puncture or damage the sidewall of your tire. Unfortunately, a sliced sidewall can’t be repaired since there is no method for sealing the slice. The sidewall of a tire flexes so much that a plug or patch won’t work.

  • car dealershipPunctured Tire: Small punctures of up to one-fourth-inch in diameter or less can be repaired as long as the damage is located at the center of the tread area or between the circumferential grooves. The cut should also not be too deep that it reaches the steel belts inside the tire.

  • Uneven Tread Wear: Severe uneven tread wear is commonly caused by improper tire alignment. Too little tread can be dangerous because your tires will have less traction on the road, which may cause you to lose control of your vehicle. This calls for a replacement since you cannot add new treads on a bald tire.

  • Valve Stem Leak: Your tires can go flat even without holes. There are other avenues for air to escape such as the valve stem. If you have leaks coming from this, the problem can easily be repaired for a few dollars by using a valve core tool and replacement cores.
