If you’ve grown accustomed to taking hot showers, it may be a little unsettling to find your water heater malfunctioning. When this happens, you're probably left wondering if your heater needs basic repairs or a full replacement. To help get your hot water back as quickly as possible, here are three signs it’s time to replace your water heater.

3 Times You Should Replace Your Water Heater

1. It's Making Strange Noises

If you hear a banging or rumbling sound as your water heater attempts to warm up your water, you may have sediment buildup on the bottom of your tank. As this sediment hardens, it will affect the water heater’s performance, causing less efficiency and eventually some damage. If you hear any strange noises, call a plumber right away.

2. Dirty or Rusty Water

3. Your Water Heater Is Old

Like most things in your house, your water heater is built to last — just not forever. You can find out exactly how old your water heater is by checking the serial number on the manufacture’s sticker. If your water heater isn’t working properly and is more than 10 years old, it may be time to replace it.
