Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures available because it’s quick, non-invasive and produces dramatic results, brightening teeth by several shades after just one appointment. When you visit your dentist’s office for this procedure, you may have several options for specific treatments.

3 Teeth Whitening Methods

Peroxide Bleaching

teeth whiteningA common teeth whitening treatment relies on the application of a carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide solution which opens up the tubules of your tooth enamel and draws out deep-set stains. While peroxide products are available over the counter, your dentist can provide a stronger solution for faster results, as well as supervise the process to avoid adverse effects such as gum irritation, uneven whitening or over-bleaching which may cause you teeth to gray.

Laser Treatment

This method also incorporates a bleaching agent but uses high-powered lights to accelerate the process by exciting the molecules of your tooth enamel. Despite the name, no lasers are used; instead, the process relies on halogen, LED or plasma arc lights. Laser treatment is more accurately called power bleaching and may last as little as five to 15 minutes.

Polishing

You may notice some teeth whitening effects after dental polishing. This procedure removes plaque and tartar from your teeth and smooths their surfaces. While this is not technically a bleaching procedure, polishing reduces surface stains and exposes the natural white of your enamel which may have been hidden behind yellow tartar.

If you’re unsatisfied with the color of your teeth, you have options. Talk to your dentist about the whitening procedures they provide, so you can start to improve your smile today.
