Gates are a critical part of commercial and residential security systems. If you’re considering installing one at your home or office, there are a few factors you’ll need to consider, including the type of gate and gate operator. Robblee’s Total Security in Tacoma has supplied western Washington home and business owners with advanced security control systems for nearly 100 years. To assist you in finding the perfect gate for your needs, they’ve offered the following guide.

Your Guide to Security Gate Operators

Manual vs. Electric

You can choose between a manual or an electric gate operator. Manual gate operators are secured with padlocks. To enter, you’ll need to get out of your car and use a key to open the lock. With an automated operator, you can stay in your car and punch in a code or use an intercom or telephone system to gain access. Though electric operators are more expensive than manual, most home and business owners prefer them because they are far more convenient, especially for high-traffic facilities. As part of a comprehensive security control system, you can also use security cameras along with your electric operator, granting access to authorized personnel.

Swing, Slide, or Overhead

Sliding gates slide from one side to the other and are preferable for parking lots. Overhead gates lift up, similar to garage doors. These are most often used in parking garages.

Pedestrian Security

Some commercial security systems require the use of gates at pedestrian entrances. These pedestrian gates are designed to allow one person to enter at a time. They open when the person enters a code or swipes a keycard. You can also use a pedestrian portal, which is similar to a turnstile. The pedestrian portal is useful in areas with a high volume of pedestrian traffic. These don’t necessarily incorporate the use of a keycard or code but prevent multiple people from entering or exiting simultaneously.
