So you’ve selected and ordered your new flooring. The next step is installing it. How long your flooring installation takes depends on how many rooms are getting new floors and what kind of material you select. Some can take as little as one day, but for larger projects and some materials like hardwood and tile, it could be a few weeks. For any flooring installation, it’s best to prep your home by following these tips.

How to Prepare for Your Flooring Installation

Furniture & Appliances

Your contractors will need the room clear to install your new flooring properly. Many companies will move furniture for you, but ask before your installation date. If you’re putting new tile or hardwood floors in a kitchen or laundry room, special arrangements may need to be made for the refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, freezer, washer, and dryer. As with any construction or remodeling project, make sure you put any valuable personal items in a safe place.

Safety

flooring installationFlooring installation is a construction process, so be prepared for loud noises and possibly strong odors. Children and pets should be kept away from the work area, even when construction crews are not there. Hardware and other construction materials could be lying around. If you have any allergies or are sensitive to dust, it’s a good idea to stay away from home until the work is complete.

Remodeling Projects

If your flooring installation is part of a larger remodeling project, make sure it is the last thing on the schedule. All walls, doors, and windows must be in place, and any painting or plastering needs to be completed prior to installing your floors. If you’re only updating them, you might need to touch up baseboards and other woodwork after the installation.
