If you’ve just bought your first HDTV from Aka’s TV & Electronics in Kahului, HI, getting accustomed to the settings can be challenging. You’ll be glad you did though — familiarizing yourself with them will let you take advantage of everything the new technology has to offer. To help you get used to your new set, your local flat screen TV purveyors have developed a brief overview of everything you need to know.

5 Important HDTV Settings Explained by Kahului, HI Flat-Screen TV Company

1. Picture Mode

Available options for this setting include “standard,” “cinema,” “dynamic,” and “vivid,” among others. What this setting mainly affects are the colors. If your main concern is getting the most correct or accurate picture, select “cinema” or related words. Settings like “vivid” will add a bluish tint, and mainly serve to make images look bigger or more enhanced in electronics showrooms.

2. Color Temperature

flat screen tvIn the color world, temperature refers to a scale from red to blue, or “warm” to “cool,” respectively. Similarly to the above setting, color temperature affects your perception of the picture, with blue tones seeming larger than life, and red tones seeming more realistic on your flat screen TV.

3. Backlight

This setting is similar to brightness, but is only available on LCD flat screen TVs; for some manufacturers, it’s referred to as “cell light” instead of “backlight.” Setting it low enough will help you reduce eyestrain and even save on electricity.

4. Brightness & Contrast

Brightness controls how dark or light the image is, while contrast (sometimes referred to as “picture”) controls how much differentiation there is between dark and light parts of the image. A good rule of thumb is to always adjust brightness before contrast.

5. Color & Tint

Color (also known as “saturation” in some systems) controls color strength. On the lowest setting, everything will appear black and white, while the highest setting will make colors appear strong and bright. Tint is used far less frequently — you can think of it as roughly a scale between green and magenta, but it was originally developed to correct for phase errors in early television sets in order to show correct colors.
