Making the decision to rent out a storage unit is exciting, as the possibilities for the storage space are seemingly endless. While you may think all items are fair game for storage, the truth is there are a handful of items that are illegal, prohibited, and incredibly dangerous to keep inside of a rented space. If you’re unsure of whether one or more of your personal belongings can be legally or safely stored in your storage unit, ask the property manager for confirmation before you proceed.

To get started, here are three items you should never keep in a storage unit:

  • Perishable Items: Perishable items, like food, will inevitably rot, mold, or become sour, creating an irreversible effect on the inside of the unit. Produce, dry goods, dairy, and meat products will all spoil in time, even with the help of a refrigerator. Pet foods are also not recommended, as they can attract bugs, rodents, and pests galore. The exception to this rule is canned food. Properly sealed and unopened items can remain in a storage unit safely for quite some time.
  • storage unitHazardous & Toxic Materials: Propane tanks from your grill, leftover motor oil, paint from a home renovation, and even harsh cleaning products can all lead to a detriment if left to sit in a storage unit. These items are extremely hazardous, and some are even combustible or flammable. Not only do they create an extreme risk to the well-being of the property itself, but it can also be a threat to the safety of other customers’ items as well.
  • Living Beings: You might think this seems obvious, but it’s helpful to be reminded that living beings do not belong in a storage unit full-time. Plants and animals cannot receive the airflow, light, or nourishment they need to survive in a storage unit. Plants will eventually wither away, potentially attracting pests. A storage unit is also not an acceptable place for a person to live, even temporarily. This is illegal and should never be attempted.
