Choosing a new boat is a bit like choosing a new car. Before you buy, there are many factors to take into consideration, from price to purpose and everything in between. Petzold’s Marine Center in Portland, CT, has sold and serviced new and pre-owned boats since 1945. Their team understands how important it is to choose the perfect vessel for your needs and budget.

Guide to Choosing a Boat

What Will You Use It For?

Are you looking for a small fishing boat to take out on the lake or a luxury yacht for elegant vacations and parties at sea? Different types of boats have unique functions. In addition to personal watercrafts and yachts, some other types include fishing boats, water sports boats, sailboats and cruisers. Decide what its function will be and how many people you want to fit aboard safely. Determining your needs and priorities will help you narrow down your choices before you buy a new boat.

Where Will You Use It?

buy-a-boat-portland-CTYou’ll also need to decide where you’ll be using it. Will you be fishing on the lake, or going out to sea? For instance, skiffs are ideal for small lakes, but you would never want to take one on the ocean or in a large lake, where waves could topple it. If you plan to use your boat on the sea, you’ll need to decide how far into the ocean you plan to go and how long you plan to stay away from shore. For example, if you want to live onboard while making a trip from Portland to Puerto Rico, you’ll need a naval vessel with equipment such as generators, GPS/radar, a freshwater maker, staterooms, heads and galleys to ensure a safe and comfortable voyage.

How Will You Tow & Store It?

Decide how you’ll transport your boat and where you’ll store it. Will you be keeping it in a storage facility during the off-season, or will it be docked at the marina? Bear in mind that while you can use a yacht or other large boat on a lake, it’s not wise to store a vessel on a frozen lake over the winter. Most boats 30 feet long and shorter can be towed using standard, full-sized trucks. Personal watercrafts can be pulled using SUVs or large cars. Sailboats and cruisers may require special equipment or setup.

Once you’ve decided the type of watercraft you want to buy, head to Petzold’s Marine Center. They have a broad selection of used and new boats for sale, including yachts, fishing and sports boats.
