Winter is on its way (or is already here for many of you), so now is the time to perform regular maintenance on your boat trailers. Preventing rush and ice damage is a big job, but Smith Trailers and Equipment, Inc., Cincinnati’s equipment trailer superstore, is here to remind you that taking care of it now can prevent expensive trailer repairs when the spring thaw comes.

When properly winterizing your boat or utility trailer, follow these steps:

  • Repack The Boat Trailer Bearings: You should do this at the end of every season, paying special attention to removing any excess water that can freeze during the winter and cause corrosion and rust.
  • Disassemble & Lubricate Moving Brake Parts: Use a corrosion-blocking grease to protect them during the winter months.
  • Wash & Detail The Trailer: Pay special attention to the undercarriage. Make sure it is thoroughly dry, especially if you’re storing it indoors.
  • Stabilize The Wheels: And also decrease the air pressure to the recommended cold weather PSI.
  • Thoroughly Inspect The Trailer: Look for any signs of corrosion, sanding off any rust you find. Check the locks, suspension, springs, and trailer hitch assembly and lubricate them with a corrosion blocker.

Follow these tips and your boat or utility trailers should make it through the winter without damage. Waiting until spring will likely invite rust, corrosion, and other nasty surprises you won’t discover until the ice melts.
