Storms are more frequent during the spring and summer thanks to higher humidity levels. This combination of moisture and warmth causes foul weather featuring lightning and high winds that can often knock out the power. Prepare ahead of time by making sure your portable generator is in operating condition.

Electrical contractor Zelek Electric Co. has been serving Old Lyme, CT, for more than 33 years. They want to help residents prepare for the New England storms ahead with these five tips on maintaining portable generators.

5 Tips for Portable Generator Care

Change Your Oil Frequently

Just like your car, you need to change your generator’s oil regularly. Every model will have its own manufacturers’ guidelines, but a good rule of thumb is to change the oil for every 100 hours of use.

Test It out Monthly

Don’t let your generator just sit there until it’s needed. Every three months, start your system and allow it to run for 30 minutes to charge the battery. This also helps keep the inner workings of your system lubricated and running smoothly.

Stock up on Supplies

Avoid the last-minute storm scramble at the grocery store and make sure that you have enough oil and supplies (such as filters) stashed away to last about one week if the power goes out.

Make Sure the Battery Stays Charged

Clear out Contaminants

Use compressed air to gently clear dust away from the crevices and inner workings of your generator. When dust and particles build up on important components such as the rotor and stator, which work together to generate electricity, they can easily wear down and stop working
