Your dentures are designed to feel and act just like real teeth. With this in mind, dentures must be cleaned and cared for on a daily basis. If you have full or partial dentures, there are a few things you need to know about your dental care routine. Below are five ways to maintain a clean, healthy smile with dentures.

5 Things You Need to Know About Denture Care

1. Brushing

denturesLike natural teeth, dentures need to be brushed daily to remove food and plaque and prevent the buildup of stains. If you wear a partial denture, take it out before brushing your teeth. For both partial and full dentures, use a soft-bristled brush that’s specifically designed for dentures, and never use toothpaste. Toothpaste is abrasive, and it can leave your dentures with microscopic scratches where plaque will build up. You should also brush your tongue and gums to remove buildup in your mouth and stimulate circulation. In between brushings, don’t forget to rinse your dentures after you eat.

2. Denture Cleaner

While toothpaste and many household cleaners are too abrasive for dentures, hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid can be gentle and effective. There are also ultrasonic cleaners for dentures that employ a cleaning solution and sound waves to dislodge food and plaque. Ultrasonic cleaners, while effective, should not replace brushing.

3. Do Not Bleach

Just like real teeth, dentures can become stained over time. Whatever you do, never use bleach to whiten your dentures. While it may whiten the teeth, it will also whiten the pink, gum-like sections. If your dentures have become stained, talk to your dentist about your options. Most teeth whitening treatments do not work on dentures, so you may need to replace them altogether.

4. Repairs & Replacements

If your dentures are uncomfortable or loose, they can cause irritation or sores in the mouth. However, don’t attempt to make adjustments yourself—most dentists can make a repair that same day. Over time, your dentures will need to be relined, rebased, or remade due to normal wear and natural changes to the gums, face, and jaw bones. Dentures generally have a lifespan of about five to seven years.

5. Regular Dental Appointments

Regular dental checkups are crucial for maintaining overall oral health. Most dentists recommend appointments every six months to ensure proper denture fit and examine your mouth for signs of oral disease. Your dentist will advise you on how often to visit.
