You try your best to brush, floss, and visit the dentist on a regular basis. After all, you care about your oral hygiene and overall health care. However, are you using the best dental care practices?

Brushing Dental Care

Keeping your teeth clean and white is a primary goal, but pay attention to the gum line, too. You can prevent gingivitis, along with the onset of periodontal disease, through a few simple steps.

The first step is brushing your teeth twice per day. Complete this initial task for two minutes each time, using a soft-bristled toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste. For an even more effective way to clean plaque off your teeth, use an electric toothbrush. Purchase a new electric toothbrush every three to four months. A manual one must be thrown out as soon as the bristles become frayed and irregular, which is much sooner.

When you brush your teeth, do so at a slight angle; the bristles should be aimed where the tooth meets the gum. Use circular or back-and-forth motions in a gentle manner, and brush all surfaces of the teeth, as well as the tongue.

After brushing, rinse your toothbrush with water and allow it to air-dry in an upright position. Don't store your toothbrush with others in the same holder or a closed, dark area. Finally, rinse your mouth with a fresh, fluoride-based mouthwash to get rid of any remaining bacteria.

Flossing Dental Care

dental careDaily flossing is also necessary for proper oral hygiene. Pull off about 18 inches of floss and twist it around the middle fingers. Grab the floss between your thumbs and forefingers tightly. Rub the dental floss gently between the teeth — never in a snapping motion. Once the floss reaches the gum line, curve it against the tooth for best results. Unwind a fresh piece of floss as you go from one tooth to another.

Avoid using toothpicks and other objects to clean between your teeth because of outside bacteria. Dental picks, tiny brushes, and other handy tools are appropriate for on-the-go dental care.

Dental Care From the Local Dentist

Whether you need routine dental exams or emergency services, you must visit your dentist regularly. It is imperative to your oral health to receive biannual teeth cleaning. If you notice a change in your oral health, such as bleeding gums, schedule an appointment with your dentist immediately.
