If your child is teething, the first sign you'll spot won't be a tiny baby tooth poking through—it will be crankiness and irritation. As a parent, it's hard to see your child in discomfort. Thankfully, there are a few dental care tricks you can use to help keep your child comfortable and ease the teething process.

dental careFirst, make sure your child has a good teething toy to chew on. A firm rubber ring is a good choice which will allow them to keep a solid grip while they chew to their heart's content. Don't use the liquid-filled rings, which can break and create a hazard for both choking and bacteria exposure. You can also help relieve pressure by rubbing your baby's gums with a clean finger or damp washcloth.

Cold temperatures can also help soothe teething pains. Give your baby a bottle of cold water to help relieve soreness. Don't use other liquids, such as juice, milk, or formula, as the constant exposure to sugar can harm your baby's new teeth and impact their future dental care. You also shouldn't freeze teething toys or give your baby ice.

Finally, if your baby is still having a hard time, pain medications are an option. Several brands make over-the-counter pain relievers for infants. However, you should always consult your pediatrician before giving an infant any medication.

The good news is, once your child's teeth come in, they'll smile brighter than ever and be ready for their first dental exam. Call a baby dentist to make an appointment when their first tooth emerges or when they turn 1. Start your child on the path to good dental care habits which will last a lifetime.
