Do you ever wake up in the morning with your jaw clenching and a pounding headache?  You are not alone.  These symptoms may be associated with your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the muscles surrounding the joint that work when you to clench and grind. 

There is a strong correlation between clenching and grinding, and headaches or migraines. Pain within the TMJ itself may include clicking of the joint, tenderness, swelling, locking and difficulty chewing. Pain can also develop in the ear, head, neck and back.

While we are awake, stress is likely a factor that contributes to the clenching of the teeth.  This typically happens when we are anxious, irritated or even concentrating.

Often TMJ symptoms and migraines go hand in hand. Each could be compounding the other painful condition.  Women are more likely than men to have migraines and TMJ pain due to genetics and hormones.

Several things can help to alleviate the pain.  Lifestyle changes are the simplest solutions. Try not to chew on things like your fingernails, pens, your lips or cheeks. Avoid chewing gum and consuming crunchy, sticky foods. Avoid opening your mouth too widely when you yawn. Relax your teeth and keep them apart while holding your face in a neutral position. Gentle jaw stretches or a warm compress can make things feel better also.

However, when you sleep, you have no control over your clenching and grinding.  If you have a habit of clenching your teeth while you are awake, you will clench them while you sleep as well.
