Now that it's finally spring, the gradually warming weather may have finally convinced you it's time to upgrade your air conditioner. Whether your current system is simply getting older or you've been having too many problems with it, upgrading will be a worthwhile investment. New air conditioners are more energy efficient, quieter, and many are now smartphone compatibility.

However, before you schedule an air conditioning installation, there are a few things you should ask. Assuming you've already found a licensed, bonded, and insured HVAC contractor whom you trust, remember to ask the following when discussing a prospective upgrade:

Which Brands Do You Service?

If you've done some research of your own, you should ask about the air conditioning brands they service to confirm whether they can install what you want. Even if they don't, keep an open mind regarding any suggestions they may have for you.

What's the Best System for My Property?

air conditioning installationLike any appliance, usage varies from home to home. A small apartment won't need the same air conditioner as a multi-level detached home. Make sure your HVAC contractor listens and understands your needs so they can make an appropriate recommendation.

Is the Current Ductwork Compatible?

Ideally, the HVAC contractor will have inspected the ductwork before making an air conditioning installation recommendation; if not, schedule this first. By examining the ductwork, they can let you know whether it needs to be cleaned, repaired, or modified for a new system.

Is the New System ENERGY STAR Qualified?

If energy efficiency was a priority in your search for a new air conditioner, the new system should be an ENERGY STAR™ product. Don't forget to ask about its Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating; the higher it is, the more efficient it is.
