We can help coach your kids to learn to enjoy Reading and Writing

A recent article by Sharon Randell, an Award-winning writer and columnist for McClatchy Tribune Information Services in Washington, D.C., published a number of tips that are helpful for kids to embrace in mastering reading and writing.

1. Learn the rules of writing (grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc.) and stick to them until you know them so very well you don’t have to think about them and you can just have fun.

2. Write about what you know, the thing you can’t get off your mind. If you want to write about something that you don’t know much about, study it until you know it by heart. Then start writing and learn even more.

3. Write the way you talk, only better. Read your writing aloud. Does it sound like you? If not, rewrite it until it does. The unique part of writing is the voice with which it’s written. Find your voice and use it to make your writing your own.

4. Read and write every day. Readers read. Writers write. Do both. Read your favorite authors. And write something just for fun every day.

At JEI we offer an effective English Language Arts (ELA) & Reading and Writing program that engages the attention of students by involving them, their thoughts and feelings. Years ago proof that a child has understood material would be by writing about the characters in the books they read. As suggested by Sharon Randell, the tips on how to help our children improve on reading and writing is by asking them what they know and effectively what they would do in the same situation -- thereby making it their own.

The JEI diagnostic system includes a series of tests so that you as the parent can see how your child is progressing and choose appropriate material for their advances. They are given a workbook on a weekly basis and tested on it in a way that is not daunting in the way school tests can be. Children flourish with praise and seeing how their hard work is paying off. This is not always easy to do when being taught at a busy school where there is only 1 teacher per 20-30 plus children.

The report does not act as a means to show failure, but to show where they have improved and show the areas where they need to focus more attention rather than going over and over material they have already learned and picked up. Each program is tailored around the child as an individual not a class or year group allowing them to work at a pace that is suited to their needs. Because the work is just right for their level not too easy or too hard they will not get bored or feel overwhelmed, which is key to them actually enjoying learning rather than dreading it.
