Building a basketball court in your backyard will bring your family years of enjoyment. While a paving company like GMG General in Anchorage can do all the work for you, they can also just bring in the concrete if you want to tackle the project yourself. With the right materials and preparation, you can actually build your own concrete basketball court at home.

5 Steps for Building a Concrete Basketball Court

1. Calculate Measurements

Calculate the measurements of a basketball court and determine whether your yard can hold a full court or a half court. Use a tape measure, or measured string to outline the court’s footprint and mark the corners with stakes.

2. Install a Basketball Pole

Using a shovel, dig a hole at least 15 inches deep for the basketball pole. Place the pole in the hole, use a level to make sure it’s perfectly vertical, and pack dirt in around the pole to secure it.

3. Pour Concrete

concreteSet up and pour the concrete for the basketball court’s surface. If your yard is sloped, you may need to hire a contractor service to level the land for the court. Form the perimeter of the court with scrap lumber and pour the concrete 4 inches thick. If you’re unsure how to do this, call a paving company.

4. Install Flooring

Your court can remain a concrete floor, but there are a number of outdoor basketball court flooring options that can enhance performance and reduce stress on your joints. These floors are usually glued directly to the concrete pad.

5. Paint Lines & Add Accessories

Hang a plumb bob from the backboard to find the baseline. Measure 15 feet for the free-throw line and paint a 2-inch line. Make a half-circle at 19 feet 9 inches for the three-point line. Add any final touches, like a fence or outdoor lighting, and you’re ready to play ball.
