Water leaks in your home can damage your property and result in hundreds of dollars wasted on utility costs. Some are easy to spot, but others are more subtle. Stuart London Handyman is Pine Grove, CA’s most reliable plumber and licensed contractor. Here, he explains what you should look for to spot a hidden water leak in your bathroom.

4 Signs of a Water Leak

1. Damaged Walls

Dark circles or stains and blistering or peeling paint and wallpaper are all strong indications of a leak within the wall. While extreme fluctuations in humidity can damage wallpaper over time, the steam from your shower is usually not enough to cause such problems. If you think there may be a leak within the wall, call a plumber right away.

2. Damaged Floors

Most bathroom floors are designed to withstand a reasonable amount of water. Water tracks and spills from day-to-day use shouldn’t cause yours to buckle, stain, or crack. If you notice such damage, or if the floor feels spongy or soft underfoot, it may indicate a leaky pipe beneath it. Some types of flooring, like tile and laminate, will curl or become loose, exposing moisture underneath.

3. Damaged Ceiling

If you sometimes forget to use a bath mat when stepping out of the shower or your child splashes water while playing in the tub, it won’t result in enough water accumulation to cause seepage. However, a long-standing water leak will. Warping or brown stains are surefire signs of a leak.

4. Mold or Mildew

Mold thrives in damp conditions. If there’s a water leak in your bathroom, there’s a good chance you’ll find mold and mildew as well. You might see mold growing in areas that have been perpetually moist, or smell a sour, musty smell. Mold can cause severe health problems, some of which are permanent, so it’s crucial to act fast.
