If there’s a new dog in your life, you’re probably filled with a lot of excitement. Puppies have endless amounts of love to give, and you can look forward to many years of fun, new adventures. Young dogs have boundless energy, so it’s important to start obedience training as soon as possible. However, all dogs are different, so how do you determine the best time to start? Trainer Constantine “Gus” Marnel, the owner of K-9 Communication in MIlford, CT, is here with some answers and advice.

How Old Should a Dog Be to Attend Obedience Training?

Puppies start learning from birth, and they are capable of learning many new commands, including “sit” and “stay,” from a very young age. House training should begin as soon as you bring your puppy home, and formal obedience training can start around seven to eight weeks of age.

Why Is It Important to Start Training at an Early Age?

obedience trainingThink of your new puppy as a sponge — they are learning something new every moment, and those lessons can shape their behavior into adulthood. Puppies must be socialized and trained early to ensure they don’t learn any bad habits or behaviors that will surface later on.

Over the past five decades, Constantine “Gus” Marnel has trained thousands of dogs using proven techniques. He graduated from the United States K-9 Academy, Ltd., and was awarded “Master Trainer” status. As a professional dog trainer, Gus doesn’t rely on bribery or shock collars. Instead, he uses loving techniques that foster a strong partnership between you and your dog. Obedience training programs are designed for each individual dog and are guaranteed for life.
