Spring is an ideal time to perform HVAC maintenance on your system, and a great place to start is by replacing the air filter. Not sure what type of air filter your unit needs? The heating and cooling technicians at ABLE Heat & Cool in Troy, Missouri, caution you not to buy just any filter.   HVAC systems are designed to operate with a specific amount of air-flow to operate correctly, safely, and efficiently.

It’s best to replace your air filter/s with the same type that came with your HVAC equipment.  Using the wrong one can dramatically change the air-flow and cause damage the compressor; even premature compressor failure.  While wanting a filter that will catch more dust, dirt, pollen, etc… is good, choosing and using the wrong filter could generate a call for repair service.  If you are thinking about or have changed filter styles, it is highly recommended to refer to your owners manual or have your system checked by a professional, especially if you’re not sure which of these types of filters are right to maintain your heating and cooling equipment.

4 Types of Air Filters for Your Furnace or AC

1. Fiberglass

HVAC maintenanceFiberglass air filters can be easily disposed of after their use and are the most common filters used in homes. These filters are layered with fiberglass fibers that trap particles, dirt, and other debris from infiltrating your unit.

2. Pleated

Also known as polyester filters, pleated air filters work similarly to fiberglass filters. They are slightly more dense and effective at stopping dust and other particles trying to slip through into the ducts.  This type could extend filter replacement by up to 3 months.

3. Washable

More common in commercial and industrial HVAC systems than residential, washable air filters rely on the buildup of dust to help stop debris from passing through. They can be cleaned and reused a limited number of times.

4. HEPA

High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) filters are commonly used to clean the air passing through them from things like mold spores, pollen’s, and dust mites to improve indoor air quality

Choosing the correct filter is as important as regularly changing it!  That’s why ABLE Heat & Cool offers routine HVAC maintenance plans for their customers.
