Sword training is a foundational component of many martial arts disciplines. Korean sword training, or Haidong Gumdo, dates back to the 3rd century and was once an important battle technique. Since that time, sword fighting for military purposes has become obsolete, but the technique is still practiced in many dojos. Haidong Gumdo is revered for its emphasis on skill, focus, and establishing confidence.

If you are interested in adding Korean sword training to your martial arts routine, there are four basics that you will cover as part of your training:

  • Stance: Stance is an important aspect of Haidong Gumdo. These foot positions help students practice aggressive and retreating maneuvers while wielding their swords. As students become more advanced, their fighting stances become more elaborate.
  • sword training Middletown NYDrawing the Sword: Drawing a sword from its sheath may seem like an easy maneuver, but there is a correct way to do it. While sword training, Haidong Gumdo students must learn how to correctly unsheathe the sword, turn the blade clockwise until it is horizontal to the ground, raise it overhead, allowing it to rest in front of the eyes. A student cannot continue their training until they master this vital movement.
  • Cutting: Sword training students must become proficient in straight, angular, lateral, and diagonal cuts before they can begin simulating combat. Some dojos will teach these cuts using wooden swords. However, advanced students may be allowed to use a sword made of forged steel to practice their cuts on bamboo or bundles of straw.
  • Danjun Hohup: Danjun hohup is a technique used to draw energy from the body for combat. It involves sitting in a deep squatting position and inhaling slowly to draw energy from below the navel. This technique is difficult and challenges the strength of many Haidong Gumdo practitioners. Once mastered, danjun hohup will allow a martial artist to move gracefully through sword combat.

Although sword training is no longer used to prepare soldiers for battle, it provides martial arts students with valuable physical and mental exercise. These skills can help you tackle any challenge and succeed in every area of life.
