The inner components of entry and deadbolt locks experience wear and tear over time, so you may need rekeying somewhere down the line. Instead of replacing the lock, this process involves a locksmith updating the existing pins and springs so you can use it with a new key. The service comes in handy for Richmond Hill Locksmith customers when they’ve lost keys or get locked out of their properties in Bryan County, GA.

Below, the locksmith explains the steps involved with lock rekeying:

  • locksmithDetach the Knob: First, a locksmith will remove the knob from the door. A small wire instrument is then inserted into the knob hole to dislodge the clip securing the knob in place.
  • Dislodge the Cylinder: Next, the technician will remove the cylinder located in the back of the knob. Placing pressure on the cylinder pops it out of the knob sleeve.
  • Remove Retainer Ring & Cylinder Plug: Once they’ve accessed the cylinder, a locksmith will remove the attached retainer ring and cylinder plug. A wrench can remove the retainer ring, but old keys are needed to take apart the cylinder plug. Inserting one of the keys in the cylinder will loosen it.
  • Insert New Pins: Once the main lock components are disassembled, the locksmith will replace old pins with new equipment. If needed, they will also take the opportunity to update the springs.
  • Reassemble the Lock: Following the same steps in reverse, the locksmith will reassemble the lock. They’ll use needle-nose pliers and tweezers to put components back together and a screwdriver to place the knob back on the door.
