Kona Community Hospital  is celebrating National Volunteer Week, April 23-29, by recognizing the volunteers who generously share their time, talent and compassion to make a difference at the hospital and in the community.

Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to engage in their communities.  It’s about working together to meet the community’s challenges and needs.

The Kona Hospital Volunteers

The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary relies on the contributions of 60 volunteers throughout the year. In 2016, these volunteers went above and beyond to serve their local health care facility for 3,200 hours. At present, the hospital volunteers help out in a number of departments, including the emergency department, obstetrics, and same-day surgery units. The Auxiliary volunteers also coordinate the Gift Shop and the Friday Bake Sale.

In addition to the Auxiliary group, the volunteers of the Chaplain Association of Kona Community Hospital offer spiritual guidance and counsel to patients of all faiths in order to assist in the healing process. These volunteers are available 24 hours a day to provide on-call spiritual care for emergency situations, or for patients and families who are dealing with critical illness.  

Raising Funds for Health Care & Services

Auxiliary funds are primarily raised to support nursing scholarships. This enormously successful program awards scholarships to deserving students to equip them with the knowledge and expertise to serve their community. Additional funds are allocated to fill hospital needs, such as a recently purchased vein finder for the Intensive Care Unit and several Panda Baby Warmers for the Obstetrics Unit. 

The Hospital Recognizes & Gives Back
