In the Northeast, it can be a real chore to keep your home or office warm. However, you have a variety of furnace types to choose from, all of which are up to the challenge. Colburns Heating & Air Conditioning, a team of furnace installation professionals serving southwestern New York and northwestern Pennsylvania, discusses some of your most important furnace options below. For more than four decades, they have helped commercial and residential customers throughout the region stay comfortable all year-round.

3 Popular Furnace System Types

1. Central Warm Air System

The most common type of furnaces used in this area are central warm air systems which use natural gas, propane, electricity, or fuel oil as the source of fuel, and a blower to move the warm air through ductwork to every room.

2. Steam or Hot Water Systems

In these systems, a boiler creates steam or heats hot water, which is circulated through a series of pipes to warm a building through radiators,  or infloor radiant tubing. Radiators are heating units mounted on the walls or baseboards that radiate warmth into each room. Radiant heat systems have pipes circulating hot water through the floor of the house.

3. Heat Pump

A heat pump (also called a reverse cycle system) takes heat from one source and moves it elsewhere. This means it can be used to both heat or cool a building. In summer, it extracts heat from the room and moves it outside; in winter, it extracts heat from the outdoors and moves it inside. Because it only moves heat instead of creating it, a heat pump is extremely energy-efficient.
