One out of every three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. For children, the statistics are equally staggering for child sexual abuse. According to the CDC, one in every four girls and one in every six boys are sexually abused before age 18.
There is a direct link between sexual abuse, food addiction, and obesity. Equally troubling are the lingering emotional effects that can leave survivors feeling isolated, ashamed, and unworthy. Eating can become part of a coping mechanism to deal with these emotions.
“Eating isn’t the real problem. It’s just a symptom. It’s not a matter of knowing what to do,” says Kay Loughrey, weight loss coach, and registered dietitian nutritionist.
Kay’s personal experience with sexual trauma and 30 years as registered dietitian-nutritionist led her to discoveries that have yielded a holistic approach to personal transformation, habit change, and weight loss for persons who have experienced trauma including sexual trauma:
- There is no need to continue to suffer in silence because the effects of the trauma will be there until they are dealt with. Quick fix dieting addresses only a symptom, not the underlying problem.
- It takes going beyond the surface to look at the root cause of food triggers. Then, a key insight can allow for seeing things anew and disrupting old patterns and beliefs.
- Once the cycle is broken, then comes discovering and building strengths until they become new habits that lead to greater confidence, success at weight loss, and inner well-being. Only then can weight loss how-to strategies be more easily sustained.
