It promises to be another rough winter in Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky, and while you may have already prepared for the colder months by putting on snow tires or installing storm windows, you should also consider the state of the plumbing in and around your house. Nothing is more inconvenient than plumbing problems, and they always seem to occur at the worst possible times. This is why Midwestern PlumbingService offers the greater Cincinnati area a 24 hour plumber service, and can also provide full consultation and assessment to make sure your home is ready for the worst this winter.

Perhaps the most common home issue that arises in the winter is frozen pipes. Because water expands when it freezes, pipes, especially those running outdoors or installed into the extremities of the home, run the risk of freezing and bursting.

So how do you know if you have frozen pipes?

  • No water is coming out of the faucet. This is the most tangibly evident sign that your pipes are frozen. Should this happen, contact a plumber as soon as possible.
  • The temperature is low enough. More than just being below freezing - that is, below 32 degrees Fahrenheit - most pipes will not freeze unless the temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Ironically, homes built in warmer climates are more prone to pipe freezing because they are not built with colder temperatures in mind.
  • Poorly insulated pipes. You are more likely to be experiencing frozen pipes if your pipes are poorly insulated from the cold. This includes pipes in attics, crawl spaces, or anything that runs directly through the outdoors.
  • There is frost on the pipes. The presence of frost formations on the outside of the pipes implies that the inside is similarly frozen solid.

So act now before an emergency situation arises by having Midwestern Plumbing Service help you winterize your water system. They will take a look at basement plumbing, insulate any exposed pipes and fix that leaking faucet. Call Midwestern Plumbing Service today to discuss your winter readiness, or any other plumbing issue at (513) 753-0050. A description of all of their services is also available on their website.
