Coping with the loss of a loved one is overwhelming enough without the added worry of funeral planning. While it’s a necessary part of the process, it does not have to be a difficult one if you know who is in charge of making the decisions.

In some cases, the deceased may have pre-planned funeral arrangements and expressed preferences for the entire service. Others may designate a specific person to plan the funeral in a will. If no one is chosen, however, funeral planning is the responsibility of the person’s next of kin, provided they are over 18 years of age.

funeral-planningTypical next of kin includes spouses, children, parents, or siblings. However, there is always the possibility of the deceased’s next of kin is another relation, such as a niece, a grandchild, or a first or second cousin. The responsibility for making funeral arrangements ultimately lies with the appropriate next of kin in the hierarchy. This may also be a guardian or fiduciary in some instances.

What happens if a person does not have a family member who can make funeral arrangements? A close friend of the deceased may be an appropriate choice and may be comfortable determining what the person would have wanted.

Bear in mind that there are many important decisions to make during the funeral planning process. Will be person be buried, or will there be a cremation service? What role will cultural elements play, if any? Are there any religious traditions that will be included?

While it can be difficult to plan a person’s end-of-life service, it can also be a cathartic way to honor the deceased with love. By keeping the person’s best interests and wishes in mind, planning a funeral or memorial service is a respectful way to honor someone’s memory and life.
