For many people, a shower door is a huge improvement from a curtain. It lasts years, is incredibly easy to clean, and, best of all, sparkles and shines. But while shower glass doors are both hygienic and classy, they do occasionally break and require glass replacement. Luckily, most shower doors are made of tempered glass, which makes them less dangerous when they break and relatively easier to clean up.

Here’s what you need to do if you ever have to deal with a broken shower door in your home:

  • Protect Yourself: This tip applies any time you’re dealing with broken glass. Before going near the mess, put on protective gloves and eyewear. You’ll probably be fine if it’s tempered glass, but why risk hurting yourself? Wear the necessary protection.

  • Sweep the Mess: You can use a broom or brush to start, but cleanup will be far more effective if you also use a wet wipe or strong and damp paper towel. Clean up very slowly to avoid flinging potential shards.

  • Remove Glass From Pane: Once you’ve swept the majority of the mess, you’ll also need to remove the remaining glass from the pane. The safest course of action is to unscrew the entire shower door, pull it out of the enclosure, and then carefully unscrew and remove the glass from the rubber.

  • Measure the Shower Door: A small crack can usually be repaired, but bigger damage merits complete glass replacement. Before calling a company for your custom solution, accurately measure the pane that requires replacement.
