Summer is right around the corner, which means your air conditioner will be working hard to keep your home cool. There is a lot of advice out there about how to reduce your energy costs by playing with the thermostat — much of it false. The experts at Ron Hammes Refrigeration debunk four common myths about heating and air conditioning so you and your wallet can remain comfortable all season long.

4 Heating & Air Conditioning Myths

1. Turning the Air Conditioner Off During the Day Saves Money

Completely turning the air conditioner off during the day is not a good idea if you are trying to save on energy costs. Your air conditioner will actually work longer and harder to bring your home down to your desired temperature when you return, resulting in a higher energy bill. But you don’t need to leave the thermostat on the same setting all day. Program your thermostat to be slightly warmer during the day when you are not around.

2. Setting the Thermostat Low Makes Your Home Cool Faster

air conditionerAir conditioning units run at a single speed. Setting the thermostat to a lower temperature won’t make your home cool down any faster. Instead, the unit will have to work longer to bring the temperature down, increasing your energy bill. Set the thermostat at your desired temperature and be patient.

3. I Can Just Use a Fan

A fan creates the illusion of cooler temperatures, but it is only generating a breeze by pushing hot air around. A fan can make you feel more comfortable, but it won’t actually make the room cooler — only an air conditioner can do that.

4. Getting Service Doesn’t Make a Noticeable Difference

For a heating and cooling unit to work properly, it has to have strong ventilation. A dirty or dilapidated HVAC will have to work harder to heat or cool your home, sending your energy bills soaring. You might even have to replace the unit sooner than expected, which can be expensive. To ensure your unit’s performance, make sure your HVAC is regularly serviced and inspected by a technician.
