It is not uncommon to think of all women’s health issues as falling under the umbrella of “gynecology.” Many people believe gynecologist, obstetrician, and OB/GYN are titles that can be used interchangeably. In reality, these are three similar but distinct disciplines. A gynecologist, an obstetrician, and an OB/GYN do specialize in women’s care, but they all focus on different aspects.

Below, Ogeechee OB-GYN, a women’s health clinic in Statesboro, GA, explains the differences between gynecology and obstetrics.

Gynecology

Gynecology is a discipline that deals with all aspects of woman’s health and reproductive care outside of pregnancy. Gynecologists are responsible for performing pap smears, breast cancer screenings, pelvic exams, administering birth control, and guiding women through menopause.

gynecologyIn addition to these services, a woman may visit a gynecologist if they are at risk of an STD, have irregular periods, or are having trouble conceiving or staying pregnant. Gynecologists are also able to provide post-natal care after a woman has given birth to ensure she heals properly after the pregnancy.

Obstetrics

Obstetrics is a discipline that focuses on a woman’s care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period. An obstetrician will monitor your progress throughout your pregnancy and can provide care for any emergencies that may arise during this time. Your obstetrician will help you develop a birthing plan and will deliver your baby as well. They can also provide postpartum care to help you recover after the birth.

OB/GYN

An OB/GYN is a specialist who is certified to practice both obstetrics and gynecology. Many women prefer this type of care because they can continue seeing the same doctor before, during, and after their pregnancy.
