If you have worn glasses or contacts for many years, you may be considering LASIK eye surgery. In LASIK surgery, an eye surgeon cuts across the cornea of your eye, lifts back a thin flap of tissue, and reshapes the lens of your eye. LASIK surgery may be used to correct the vision of a person who is near-sighted, short-sighted, or who is living with astigmatism.

LASIK is not for everyone. For instance, patients with a very strong prescription may see a mild improvement in their vision, but will still need to wear glasses and contacts. For those who are ideal candidates, however, LASIK can vastly improve their vision and overall quality of life.

No Need for Glasses or Contacts

Most patients elect to get LASIK because they no longer want to wear corrective eyewear, such as glasses or contacts. Contacts are uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time and can cause dryness and irritation. Glasses, while easier on the eyes, are cumbersome and can get in the way while exercising or playing sports. The majority of patients who undergo a LASIK procedure never have to use corrective eyewear again. For those who still need glasses or contacts after the procedure, the prescription is generally much lighter.

Very Little Pain or Downtime

LASIKDespite being a surgical procedure, the downtime and pain level for LASIK are both relatively low. Patients are given a mild sedative for the procedure, and some eye drops to help with dryness and irritation in the days following the procedure. These side-effects diminish within a week, and patients are able to see clearly within a day or two of the procedure.

Corrections Can Be Made in the Future

While the success rate for LASIK is high, there are incidences of patients whose vision begins to worsen in the future. If your vision does recede, further corrections can safely be made using LASIK.
