In the state of Ohio, the law recognizes some key differences between speeding and reckless driving citations. Though both are traffic tickets, the exact nature of what qualifies as speeding and what constitutes reckless driving are markedly different.

Speeding

traffic ticketA speeding ticket is issued when a driver is operating their vehicle in excess of the posted speed limit. High rates of speed are the only reason a traffic ticket of this type would be issued, and it is issued only to the driver of the vehicle. Remember: you can be ticketed regardless of whether you're going five mph or 50 mph over the speed limit, so always obey all speed parameters.

Reckless Driving

Reckless driving is an umbrella term that encompasses a number of moving violations the law views as careless or dangerous. You need not be speeding to be cited for reckless driving. Also unlike speeding tickets, anyone causing disruption in or around a vehicle, including the driver, passengers, and even pedestrians, can be ticketed for reckless driving. Some of the more common reasons for a reckless driving citation include: failing to yield the right of way, tailgating, road rage that results in physical violence, not staying within your lane of traffic, and using your vehicle to destroy someone else's property.
