Sod is like a carpet of lawn and soil that you can roll out to create an instant landscape. Because it can take one to two years before the roots are fully established on the ground, many customers want to know when they should install sod in their yard.

Later Summer or Early Fall

Sod installation in St. Louis, MOIt is possible (although not recommended) to install sod year-round. However, for most grasses, the optimal period for sod installation is in the late summer or early fall. During this time, days are long enough to encourage continued grass growth, but the temperatures are cool enough that moisture does not evaporate quickly and the grass and its root systems don’t have to undergo needless stress.

Spring

You can also install sod during spring (in fact, warm season grasses like St. Augustine and Bermuda thrive on it), but you have to protect it from drought when the heat of summer arrives. Water frequently—once each in the morning and afternoon—to prevent the roots from drying. Installation during summer is not recommended, since the extra irrigation necessary can lead to insect, fungus, and disease damage.

Winter

It’s riskier to plant sod during the winter. For one thing, it's difficult to tell the difference between dormant and dead. However, once you've laid it out, you should press out air pockets using a lawn roller to encourage the establishment and minimize root loss. Irrigate well, not to promote growth but prevent extreme dryness. Water again after a week or more without rain. Do not apply fertilizer or weed killers, which can block rooting.
