No matter how careful you are, workplace accidents happen. Do you know how to handle the workers' compensation claims process? Under Ohio’s workers’ compensation laws, you have to take certain actions, or you’ll miss out on receiving payments you deserve. Here’s how to obtain benefits for a workplace injury.

What You Need to Know About the Workers’ Compensation Claims Process

How to File a Claim

File your claim by filling out a First Report of an Injury form. Employers or their managed care organizations often fill out and file the forms after workers notify them of injuries. Using your Social Security number, you can check with the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) to find out if they filed for you.

How Long Processing Takes

Workers’ compensation claim approval entitles you to have your medical treatment bills paid. You can also receive compensation for disability, lost wages, and a lump sum payment if you agree to settle your claim with your employer.

How to Appeal Denied Claims

The BWC issues an order that includes specific reasons for a denial. To appeal, you must file a notice within 14 days after you receive the order. You can file online with the Industrial Commission, and they will set a hearing date.
