Scaffolding is an important part of the construction industry, enabling workers to access heights they otherwise could not reach. Whether you’re building a house or renovating a commercial building, this equipment must be used properly to avoid an accident that could cause injuries or even death. Atlas Sales Company, a premier provider of scaffolding and shoring equipment with locations in Honolulu and Kapolei on Oahu and Puunene on Maui, advises customers on how to use scaffolding safely. With more than four decades in the business, they have the expertise you need.

3 Fundamental Scaffolding Safety Tips

Use the Equipment Properly

Scaffolding Honolulu HIFollow all instructions from the scaffolding manufacturer when you assemble or disassemble the structure, and stay off it in windy or stormy weather. Inspect the system before use to see if ropes are frayed, pulleys are cracked, or blocks or fittings are worn. Never walk beneath scaffolding unless a mesh net has been installed to catch falling objects.

Conduct Competent Person Training

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations require construction employees to receive competent person training (CPT) before they use scaffolding. CPT-trained employees will recognize existing or potential dangers and be authorized to correct the problems.

Don't Exceed Scaffolding Height Limits

OSHA regulations limit the height of scaffolding to 4 times the narrowest width of the scaffold. For instance, if the scaffold is 5 feet wide and 7 feet long, the maximum height of the scaffolding is 20 feet. If you exceed these limits, you risk an unsteady scaffold that endangers workers.
