You want the best door locks possible to keep your home secure. You may have seen some referred to as “high security,” but what does that mean, and how are they different from standard locks? Here’s an explanation from Able Security Locksmiths of Kenvil, NJ.

No one wants to come home to find that a burglar has picked their locks. The mechanisms in standard locks, while fairly secure, can often be figured out and manipulated with some amount of work. Skilled lock pickers may do this with very little trouble. High-security door locks circumvent this with more complex mechanisms that resist even persistent efforts to get past them. Security pins keep the lock from being forced, and special measures are added to prevent “bump keys” from being used to jostle it open.

If someone grows impatient with trying subtle methods, they may try to use brute force to break or remove the lock. One common way of doing this is drilling into the mechanism. To prevent this, high-security door locks are reinforced with sturdy metal plates, pins, or casings to keep the drill from penetrating. This also makes locks more resistant to other direct physical attacks.

Standard keys are easy to duplicate, something that may cause problems if a spare key gets into the wrong hands. Unscrupulous locksmiths may even copy keys that say they should not be duplicated. However, the companies that make high-security door locks tend to have more stringent restrictions on key copying, making it harder for a duplicate to fall into the wrong hands.
