A missing tooth not only impacts your self-confidence, but it’s also detrimental to your dental health. One lost tooth can cause bone deterioration in the jaw, spur cavities by allowing space for bacteria to develop and progress, and even lead to additional tooth loss. Dental implants are an excellent way to restore missing teeth, offering a natural look, feel, and function. Here, dentist Brian Perelmuter, DMD of Naugatuck, Connecticut, explains how dental implants work.

Placing a dental implant takes several steps. First, in the case of a tooth that’s damaged beyond repair but still in place, a tooth extraction is done, or any excess bits of tooth removed if only part of a tooth is lost. Once this has healed, a tiny titanium post is surgically implanted into the jawbone in the gap where a tooth once was. This will serve as the “root” of your new tooth.

This forms a long-lasting and sturdy foundation for your incoming replacement tooth. After this healing process—which can range from a few weeks to months—a small connecting piece known as an abutment is placed on top of the titanium post. The replacement tooth is then cemented over the abutment.

In cases where multiple teeth are missing, a dental bridge can be installed instead. Like an implant, a bridge is “fixed” in the mouth; rather than replacing a single tooth, however, it involves at least three crowns connected to fill a missing space. Thanks to the manner in which they are installed, dental bridges offer a much more secure solution to replacing lost teeth than dentures.
