A tooth filling is the most effective dental treatment available for cavities. Your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill the gap with a safe, durable material. If you haven't had a filling before, you can make the process easier by following these five steps recommended by the Center for Community Wellness in Uvalde, TX.

Preparing for a Tooth Filling

1. Make an Appointment

Even if you’re sure youtooth filling need a filling, you'll need a preliminary appointment for your dental office to take x-rays and  examine the damage. Afterward, you'll be able to schedule the filling itself.

2. Decide on a Type of Tooth Filling

There are several types of filling materials, including white composite resin, metal amalgam and gold fillings. Not every dentist provides every type of filling, so check that the one you want is available.

3. Determine the Finances

Check whether your insurance will cover a tooth filling. If not, and the price is too high for you to cover out of pocket, talk to your dentist. Many dental offices provide payment plans, or you may be able to switch to a more affordable treatment.

4. Address Dental Fear

Many people avoid the dentist out of fear or anxiety—which may contribute to the forming cavities in the first place. If you're nervous about your dental procedure, practice relaxation techniques or bring a friend or loved one with you to the appointment.

5. Ask for Accommodations

Your dentist can also help with dental fear. It may help to have the dentist explain each step of the procedure in detail, or you may want to know as little as possible about the process. Sedation and anesthetic can also help. Talk to your dentist about your anxiety; most are willing to help and may offer suggestions of their own.
