Trembling and shivering in dogs can be brought on by a variety of factors, including illness, infection, or anxiety. Not all causes are so grim: some dogs shake simply from the excitement of seeing their owner walk through the door. But how do you know when to seek help for dog tremors at an animal hospital, and how can it be treated?

Dog Trembling Causes & Cures

This condition, also known as GTS, can cause a dog of any age, breed, or size to noticeably shake. Unfortunately, the cause of GTS isn’t yet known, but symptoms can be detected as early as nine months old. Treatment by corticosteroids like prednisone can often offer the dog relief.

Canine Distemper

Young dogs and dogs that haven’t been fully vaccinated are at risk for the virus that causes canine distemper. This condition is often accompanied by other signs, like nose and eye discharge, coughing, and fever. Distemper treatment includes the use of antibiotics, hydration, physical therapy, and other supportive care.

Nausea & Organ Disease

Much like humans, dogs can shiver if they’re experiencing motion sickness or an upset stomach. Sometimes the nausea is brought on by eating too much, but in some cases, it can be caused by ingesting a toxic substance or even kidney or liver disease. Therefore, it’s not always clear how to treat this type of trembling, as it depends on what’s causing the dog’s nausea. If you suspect your dog has ingested something poisonous, don’t hesitate to contact an animal hospital.

Pain & Old Age

Tremors are not unusual in older dogs, especially in their hind legs. Sometimes, though, the tremors can be brought on by pain from injury or arthritis. If your dog’s legs shake while standing, it’s best to have him examined by a veterinarian.
