Greater Cleveland has been under a barrage of storms in the last few days. According to WKYC Channel 3 Meteorologist Betsy Kling, we've received well over an inch of rain in many areas. When that much rain comes down, it's very common for homeowners to have their sump pumps fail. The pumps burn out trying to keep up with the water flow caused by the rain.

Needless to say, without a sump pump, your basement will flood, and that's a costly problem to clean up. So if you haven't heard your pump come on, call us immediately. We'll replace your sump pump promptly, possibly sparing you the ordeal of a basement flood clean-up.

While we're at it, we'll talk to you about the benefits of a battery backup. When you lose your electrical power in a thunderstorm, your pump stops working unless you have a battery backup. We recommend getting this, since we have a tendency to lose power during bad storms. Click this link to learn how a sump pump operates.

Here are some important steps you can take to avoid having a wet basement.

Make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear. If water cannot run off your roof and be collected into the downspout, it will overflow the gutters and drip down along the foundation. Feel your basement walls for moisture. Listen closely to the sound of water that may be seeping into the concrete block from the outside.

Check for mold. If you see mold along the basement floor or wall, you have a problem, and clogged gutters and downspouts are often the culprit. Mold can cause a lot of health issues; it has to be removed.

Inspect your sump pump to make sure it's working properly. Keep the sump clear of any debris that could interfere with the operation of the float that activates the pump. Pour water into the sump to make sure it doesn't flow back into the area once the pump turns off. This would be caused by a bad check valve.

Inspect the outside of the house. Walk around your house to see if you have water pooling against the foundation. Water should always be diverted away from your house. If your gutters and downspouts are clear and you still have water against the house, you may need to have your landscaping touched up to provide better drainage away from the house.
