Whether you have a whole-house unit or a window-mounted air conditioner, it’s important to keep the air conditioner coils clean to improve efficiency and extend the life of the unit. Duncklee Cooling & Heating, a respected furnace and air conditioner repair service in Stonington, CT, explains how to clean the coils properly and reduce your energy costs.

How to Clean Your Air Conditioner Condenser Coils

Access the Coils

air conditioner Using a small screwdriver, unscrew the access panel on your A/C unit to reveal the condenser coils. On a window unit, you'll find it on the exterior portion; if it’s mounted in an upper floor window, you may have to remove the unit to reach the panel. On a whole house unit, the panel is usually located on one end. Check your user manual if you have trouble locating the coil panel.

Remove Debris

Once you can see the coils, remove any debris (leaves, grass, hair, etc.) by hand. Then, gently run a coil brush over the coils to remove dust, dirt, and other debris. A coil brush is available at any hardware store, although there’s a chance you could get away with using any stiff-bristled brush or a small whisk broom.

Clean the Coils

For an indoor unit, skip the rinse step, and simply use a spray can of (slightly pricier) "non-rinse" foaming coil cleanser, which is rinsed away during use as condensation forms.

For best results, clean your coils annually during spring.
