In 1923, 18 miles of Alaska’s Seward Highway were built. The construction team of the 1920’s could not have known that, today, the highway would stretch over 125 miles of land, with plans to expand in the immediate future. The Seward Highway Expansion Project is currently underway, and the team at Alaska Hydro Ax in Anchorage is helping with land clearing efforts as the project rolls out.

Are you looking for more information about the construction project? Read on to find out about the work and what’s to come as a result:

  • Present Highway: Currently, the highway winds through Alaska and covers a good deal of land. As one of the main highways within the state, it’s used by residents and visitors alike. The current highway was completed in 1951 and includes exits to the Kenai Peninsula, Chugach National Forest, and the Kenai Mountains. The highway’s route begins in Anchorage and ends in Seward, and the road is paved and open all year, extreme weather conditions notwithstanding. Presently, the major communities served by the highway include Anchorage, Girdwood, Moose Pass, and Seward.
  • Planned Improvements: The multi-million-dollar project is expected to decrease traffic and travel times throughout Alaska. Currently, the plan accounts for a widening of the highway, which would include adding three lanes in both directions. Additionally, it will improve several interchanges along the route, and a new overpass bridge will be constructed.
