Pool service specialists suggest that opening your pool in the spring instead of waiting for summer can save you money because the longer you wait, the more algae will build up. More algae means more chemicals and more time spent cleaning. If you’re ready to get your pool up and running, here are four tips that will help you get back in the water this summer.

4 Steps to Opening Your Pool

1. Fill the Pool

When the weather starts to get warmer and the time of frost has passed, you can begin filling your pool. This could take a while, so start it early in the day so you don’t have to run it overnight. While you’re waiting, connect your pump.

2. Prime the Pump and Check for Leaks

When the water is about halfway up your skimmer, you can remove the winterizing plugs and prime your pump. Priming gets the air out of the pump and water into it. When the pump is working properly, check the plumbing for leaks. If you aren’t comfortable repairing leaks yourself, call pool contractors to get the job done before you let the pump run for a while. If you don’t notice any leaks, go ahead and let the pump run to start filtering the water.

3. Vacuum the Bottom

4. Balance Your Chemicals

Once the pool is full, the pump is running, and the bottom has been vacuumed, it’s time to test the chemicals and shock the pool. When the chemicals are balanced, you no longer have to run the pump all day for filtering; six to 10 hours should suffice for a properly treated pool.
