One of the highlights of early pregnancy is seeing your baby for the first time via ultrasound. Ultrasound gives you a glimpse of what’s happening in utero, and provides your obstetrician with an effective tool to track your baby’s growth. But if you never had an ultrasound before, you may be nervous or apprehensive. At Thameside ObGyn Centre in Groton, CT, where you will find high-level, compassionate and patient-focused care, the skilled professionals assure that ultrasound is safe and painless.

A Guide to Your First Prenatal Ultrasound

Why is Ultrasound Important?

Ultrasounds are considered routine prenatal carultrasounde. The first ultrasound allows your doctor to confirm the heartbeat and accurately measure the baby, to pinpoint your due date. Your doctor will make sure the baby is safely growing inside your uterus, and rule out an ectopic or tubular pregnancy. Finally, it will be revealed whether you’re carrying a singular baby or multiples. Most initial ultrasounds take place anywhere from 6 to 9 weeks in the first trimester.

What Happens During Ultrasound?

The procedure is noninvasive and safe, requiring no radiation. Once you are reclining comfortably on the exam table, the doctor will apply a small amount of gel to your abdomen. Next, he or she will glide the ultrasound probe along your skin, and through high frequency radio waves, the image of your uterus will appear on screen. You will be guided through everything you see, and will probably receive a black and white printed photo to take home. The entire exam should take less than 30 minutes.
