It can happen to anyone—you try to remove a key too quickly or forcefully from a lock, and part of it breaks off. While you may need to call a locksmith to address this situation, there are some steps you can first try on your own to possibly remove the broken portion.

Locksmith Provides 3 Ways to Remove a Broken Key From a Door

Locksmith1. Use Tweezers

If a small portion of the key is sticking out from the lock, you may be able to pinch it out with your fingers. If the entirety of the broken-off section is stuck in the lock, you may be able to retrieve it with thin tweezers. Make sure they’re the right size before trying to remove a key stuck inside the lock, or you could accidentally jam it in further.

2. Use Your Screwdriver

This is another potential fix if the key is stuck inside the lock. Find a small screwdriver that you can use to try and wedge enough of the key from the lock to remove it by hand. As with the tweezers, make sure it’s small enough. If you use a screwdriver that’s too large, you could cause damage that will require purchasing a new door lock.

3. Tap the Cylinder

If you have the type of lock which can be removed so that the key is facing down towards the ground, you can try and tap the cylinder until the portion falls out. Only attempt this if you know enough about your lock to remove it safely without causing extra damage.

Sometimes, you may not be able to remove a broken key on your own. When you need a quality locksmith in the Caro, MI, area, contact the professionals at Security Lock Service. Visit them online to learn more about what they do, or call (989) 673-1682.
